What is PLA (Polyactic Acid) ?

PLA (polyactic acid) is typically made from the sugars in corn starch, cassava or sugarcane.

It is biodegradable, carbon neutral and edible. To transform corn into plastic corn kernels are immersed in sulfur dioxide and hot water, where its components reak down into starch, protein, and fiber. The kernels are then ground and the corn oil is separated from the starch.

The traditional plastic comes from crude oil which is one of the earth's critical non-renewable resources. PLA is one of the best available substitute for plastic since it's raw material comes from natural plants.

The production of PLA is roughly a 68% reduction in carbon footprint versus most traditional plastics.
